Windows Phone app and Diving Log Touch updated

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

An update of Diving Log for Windows Phone 8.1 is now available in the Windows Phone store. What’s new?

  • Update to Windows Phone 8.1
  • Import logbook file from the documents folder
  • Export logbook file to the documents folder
  • Email logbook file as attachment
  • Fast app resume

The Windows Phone 8.1 update allows you to sync your logbook file locally with your phone, which is useful if you have no internet connection for using the cloud (OneDrive or Dropbox). Connect your phone to your PC, and export your logbook file in Diving Log 5.0 to SQLite. Please note, you cannot save the SQLite file directly onto your phone. Instead, save it to a local folder (e.g. your desktop) and copy it manually to your documents folder on the phone.

Then start Diving Log on your phone, swipe to the menu on the left and open the “Manage Logbooks” page. In the app bar menu, select “Import” to import your logbook file from the documents folder. If you want to sync back to your PC, select “Export” and save the file to the documents folder. Connect your phone to the PC, copy it to a local folder and use the “Diving Log” import function in Diving Log 5.0 to import the changes back to your desktop logbook.

Here is the changelog from the previous update two weeks ago (I haven’t written a blog post):

  • Japanese Language
  • New Chart Open / Closed Circuit
  • SAC rate improvement from desktop version

Diving Log Touch update:

There is also a minor update for Diving Log Touch available in the Windows Store. It fixes some Japanese localization issues, contains the updated SAC calculation from the latest Diving Log 5.0 update and adds a “Review” button to the app bar, which disappears automatically once you’ve tapped on it, so it doesn’t get in the way.

Touch Downloader

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

A lot of divers don’t want to use a laptop to download their dives during vacation. Instead there are many requests to download dives directly to a tablet, which is more lightweight than a laptop. Unfortunately this is technically challenging or almost impossible to do this from a tablet app (e.g. iPad or Windows Store app) due to hardware limitations or missing API’s. Because of that, I created a touch optimized dive computer downloader (based on libdivecomputer), which runs on the desktop in full screen. It looks exactly as Diving Log Touch and can be easily used with a touch screen or mouse, but it is a desktop application and thus does not have the limitations of Windows Store apps.

Download dives on a Windows 8 tablet

Because it is a desktop application, the touch downloader cannot be used on a Windows RT device (e.g. Surface RT). You need a full Windows 8 tablet or PC to run the downloader. It works also on Windows 7 and Vista, however this app is meant for touch screen devices. You can launch the app directly from Diving Log Touch:

Tap the download button in the app bar

Tap the download button in the app bar

From the next page you can launch the desktop touch downloader

From the next page you can launch the desktop downloader

When you tap on “Launch Downloader”, Diving Log Touch will be closed and the desktop is displayed. On the desktop the touch downloader app starts automatically in full screen:

When the downloader was launched from Diving Log Touch, the dives are imported directly into the touch logbook. When it was started from the desktop, it will download the dives into your desktop logbook. After downloading and importing, you can either close the desktop downloader with the X in the upper right corner or you can switch back to Diving Log Touch with the back button in the upper left corner.

If the Touch downloader does not start (and tapping the “Download” button just opens the website), start Diving Log 6.0, click on the menu “File > Preferences > File Association > Apply:

Frequently asked questions:

  • Where can I download the Touch Downloader?
  • Why does this app run on the desktop and is not integrated into Diving Log Touch?
    • It is currently technically not possible to create a dive computer downloader in a Windows Store app
  • Why do I have to install the Diving Log 6.0 desktop application to get the touch downloader?
    • The touch downloader is integrated into the Diving Log 6.0 setup, because Windows Store apps cannot install desktop components
  • On which devices does this downloader work?
    • The downloader runs on Windows 10, 8, 7 and Vista and requires the .NET Framework 4.0 (only Vista and Win 7)
  • When I tap “Launch Downloader”, a website opens or nothing happens at all.
  • I have a Windows RT device (e.g. Surface RT or Nokia Lumia 2520), can I use this downloader?
    • Unfortunately not at the moment. On Windows RT you cannot run desktop applications (except MS Office). There are also no dive computer drivers for Windows RT available
  • I have an Android tablet, can I download my dives directly with it?
  • I have problems downloading my dive computer, what should I do?
    • Please have a look at this page and/or contact me with the exact error message and problem description
  • My dive computer is not listed, how can I help to get it supported?

Online dive site search for tablet and phone

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

In Diving Log 5.0 on the desktop you already can perform an online search for dive sites and import new sites into your own logbook. This feature will be available now also in Diving Log on Windows Phone and Diving Log Touch on Windows 8 in the next update. You can either search for a dive site name or search for dive sites nearby, which means in these touch centric apps near the center of the map. When you tap on an online dive site flag and then again on it’s label, you can import this dive site into your logbook.

Diving Log Touch: Open the app bar and click on “Search”. Enter a search term to filter your existing dives, then tap on “Search online”. Click on “Search nearby” in the app bar to search for dive sites at the center of the map:

Diving Log Touch – SkyDrive Sync

Tuesday, June 4th, 2013

Today I’ve released the next update of Diving Log Touch to the Windows Store, which should be available within one week. Beside the new statistic charts I’ve also implemented SkyDrive sync into the logbook management pane. While you could save to SkyDrive (and Dropbox) before by using the file picker integration, the new integrated sync is more comfortable and easier to use. You can now sync easily between Diving Log 5.0, Diving Log for Windows Phone and Diving Log Touch.

The next update of Diving Log Touch for Windows 8 and Windows RT includes most of the charts already available in Diving Log 5.0. To view the charts, just scroll to the right in the statistics section. To change the type of the chart, tap on the header title (e.g. “Chart Years”) and a dropdown list appears.

Diving Log Touch Update (version 1.2)

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

While I’m working currently mainly on a new online logbook sync for the desktop version (more about that soon), I’ve completed another update for Diving Log Touch. It brings location and maps functionality, which is especially great on a tablet device. Diving Log Touch has now the dive site maps functionality, you already have in the desktop and phone version. It is using also the location service to capture your current position into the dive site details. Unfortunately most of the current devices don’t have GPS and just use WiFi triangulation, which is not very accurate.

Map of all your dive sites with coordinates

When you tap the new “Map” tile in the navigation bar on the main screen, you get into the new full screen map, which shows all your dive sites with GPS coordinates. When you tap on a dive site you’ll see the label with the name, tap again on the label to navigate into the site details. You can also search for dive site names and use the location service to get basic navigation functionality (distance to selected dive site, speed, course, etc.), similar to that function on Windows Phone on the right.

Editing of the dive site coordinates

When editing dive sites, you can now capture your current position into the coordinate fields. The lat/lon editor is now also optimized for touch keyboards with split text fields. The dive site view got also its own little map control, which just shows the current selected dive site. The view is interactive, which means you can zoom in and out and change the map mode. When you tap on the flag icon, it will navigate to the full screen map and zoom into the current selected dive site.

Diving Log Touch Update

Monday, November 5th, 2012

The first update of Diving Log Touch should be available this week in the Windows Store. I’ve tested it on Windows RT for ARM devices like the new Surface tablet, it contains some minor bug fixes and I’ve implemented the Share feature of Windows 8. The Share function can be reached from the Charms bar and allows you to share certain content from Diving Log with other apps you’ve installed on your device. It can be quite useful, but it really depends on what other apps you’ve installed and what they can do with this data. Here are some examples:

Tap the Share button in the Charms Bar to send data to other apps.

Learn more about a country by sharing it to the Wikipedia app.

Send a dive site map image via the mail app to your buddies.

Share your latest dive activity on Facebook or Twitter with your favorite social network app.

I expect that there will be many more use cases in the future, when more apps arrive in the store. Think about an app with global dive site information, where you can post or retrieve dive site data.

Diving Log Touch for Windows RT (here running on the new Surface) will be available this week.
