Diving Log 2.0 for Android released

Sunday, April 9th, 2017

One year after the initial release of Diving Log for Android, the latest update has finally reached feature parity with the Windows Phone version. You will find in the latest update the following improvements and new features:

  • Map navigation panel
  • Online dive site search
  • Nitrox, SAC & Unit Calculator
  • Android 7 split screen improvements
  • GPS coordinate capture improvements
  • Bug fixes

The map screen has received some significant improvements. You can now activate a navigation panel, which shows you your current position, speed, altitude and course. When you select a dive site flag you can see also the distance, target course, time to target and the ETA (estimated arrival time). This is useful if you’re on a dive boat and want to check how long it will take to arrive the dive spot:

Navigation Panel

The navigation panel is mostly useful for nautical navigation on a boat. To navigate to a dive site on land, just select a dive site flag and tap on the Google route button at the bottom. This will open the Google Maps app and calculate a route to the selected dive site:

You can now also search in the divelogs.de database for dive sites which are not stored in your logbook. You can either search by name or around a certain area by tapping into the map. Then you can import any of the dive sites into your own logbook file. And last but not least I’ve added the Nitrox, SAC and unit calculators to the Android app:

Android 7 offers a new split screen function and I’ve improved the compatibility of the Diving Log app for this feature. It should now work just fine in split screen mode on phones and tablets:

Today you can download the next update of Diving Log, which brings some great new features:

If you have version 5.0.12 installed, you can simply install the update setup. If you have an older version, I recommend to install the full setup instead (you do not need to uninstall the old version before).

New online logbook sync with Scubacrowd.com

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

I’m currently preparing the next public beta, which will be available in the next few days. This beta will also include a new web sync function to Scubacrowd.com, who just revamped their online logbook to fit better with the data available in your offline logbook. You will find the sync function in the “Web” toolbar menu.

In the last Diving Log update I had to remove two online logbook sync functions because the websites were discontinued, so I’m glad to add a new one today. I’m currently finishing another big feature which I’ll announce shortly, and then you can try both new features in the public beta. Stay tuned!

New Diving Log Beta available

Monday, January 7th, 2013

Today you can download a new beta version of Diving Log 5.0. Make sure you have version 5.0.8 installed before installing the beta update. This update brings the following new features:

  • DiveMate USB for Android sync (see below)
  • Diveboard.com sync (see below)
  • Search dive sites online
  • Hungarian language support (special thanks to Attila!)
  • Import dive profile CSV files (Logbook Window -> Profile Tab)

DiveMate USB sync:

DiveMate_Tablet

DiveMate USB is a new app for Android tablets and smartphones, which can download several dive computers right on your phone or tablet. It is available in the Google Play Store and can be synchronized with Diving Log 5.0 via USB or Dropbox. I’m really happy to see this app joining the existing Android apps ScubaLog and Dive Log and now there are 3 apps you can choose from (or you can use all three, of course).

Diveboard.com Sync:

With Diveboard.com, another great online logbook is now compatible with Diving Log 5.0. You can upload and download your dives to the website from the “Web” toolbar button in the main toolbar. Diveboard.com is along with divelogs.de also one of the data providers for the new online dive site search in the map window. All your dives are uploaded as private dives, but if you want, you can make them public on the website afterwards.

Please note, this is a beta update, so if you find any problems or bugs, please let us know. The new DiveMate and Diveboard.com sync functions involve several parties, and while we’ve tested everything intensively, there is a good chance that there are still some issues.

New maps feature in the desktop version

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

Having all the nice maps features in the desktop, tablet and phone apps, there remains one problem: where to find all the GPS coordinates for your existing dive sites in your logbook? When going to a new dive site you can take a GPS device with you, but that doesn’t help for your existing dives. This is getting a lot easier: in the maps window in Diving Log 5.0, you can now search 2 online sources, divelogs.de and diveboard.com.

Search sites online

Search sites online

Type a dive site name into the search box in the upper right corner – this will filter your existing dives in your logbook. When you click the new “Search online” button on the left side, Diving Log will query dive sites from the 2 online logbooks and display the results as yellow and blue flags on the map. When you left-click on a site flag, you can import it into your logbook. I recommend that you activate the satellite view to find the best matching flag as there is no guarantee that a position is correct.

Search nearby sites

Search nearby sites

When you know roughly the area where a dive site is located, you can right-click into the map at the approximate position. When you click on “Search near by” in the context menu, all sites around that location will be displayed. Both methods are a great way to find new spots which are currently not in your logbook. All dive sites were created by users who upload their dives to the online logbooks. The Diveboard.com synchronization will be finished soon and I’ll provide a beta version, so you can test the logbook sync as well as the dive site search in the map window.

Two nice add-ons for Diving Log

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Today I want to show you two nice add-ons for Diving Log. Both tools were created by Diving Log users and add some great features, which are currently not available in Diving Log. The first one is “Facebook Uploader“, which lets you post any dive from your logbook to your Facebook wall. It creates a profile picture and uploads the picture together with some dive data to your Facebook account. Andrew Forget, the developer of this add-on, is looking for translators for other languages. Currently it is available in English and German.

The 2nd add-on is “GeoTag“, which lets you pick the dive site coordinates within Google Earth, or optionally extracts them out of a geo-tagged photo file (created by a GPS equipped camera). That is great for those who don’t have a GPS device or GPS equipped smartphone. Just open the tool and pick for any dive site in your logbook the coordinates in Google Earth. Thanks to RenĂ© for this great tool!

You can add both add-ons to the “Tools” menu in Diving Log (GeoTag adds itself automatically when you launch it the first time manually). To add the Facebook Uploader, click “Manage External Tools” and then “Add” and naviate to “C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\AndyDragon Software\Diving Log Software”.

New myUemis web sync

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

3 days ago I wrote about the current Uemis SDA situation and now you can sync your dives from the Uemis online logbook into Diving Log 5.0.4. You can find the new Uemis sync dialog in the Web menu in Diving Log:

Uemis Sync

Uemis Sync

Login with your Uemis username and password, then click the download button. The initial sync could take a while, depending how many dives you have in your online logbook. Future syncs will download only the new dives, which is a lot faster. In future, a complete offline sync is also planned. If you want to access the raw XML data from the myUemis website, you will find it after the sync in the folder C:\ProgramData\Diving Log\Uemis

Uemis Zurich dive computer

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

The Uemis AG, manufacturer of the Uemis SDA dive computer, is in liquidation since June 21. From their official website:

Since 21.06.2011, there is a bankruptcy proceeding for the Uemis AG, Adliswil. Orders won’t be handled anymore.

This is especially sad for all SDA owners, because this computer followed a strict online logbook concept. All dives can only be synchronized with the Uemis web server – there is no local download capability. That means, when the Uemis server may be shutdown somewhere in the future, SDA owners won’t be able to download their dives from the dive computer anymore. And they won’t be able to access their already downloaded dives in the online logbook anymore.

I was in contact with Uemis since the introduction of the SDA in early 2009 and tried to convince them for an additional local sync solution or at least a way to backup the online dives to the local computer – without success. During that time I got numerous user requests, asking for an integration into Diving Log, but there was not much I could do without Uemis.

If you have an Uemis SDA, do not fear. Not everything is lost, because a group of developers is currently working on a solution, including Jef Driesen from libdivecomputer, which is already the backend of most downloaders in Diving Log and MacDive. We also found a way to access the online dives on the still running Uemis servers and I’ve created already a quick import for these online dives. Read more about that on Scubaboard.com

In the end we hope to have a local sync solution and also a way to automatically download the dives from the Uemis servers, so stay tuned and hope the best!
