Uemis Zurich dive computer

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

The Uemis AG, manufacturer of the Uemis SDA dive computer, is in liquidation since June 21. From their official website:

Since 21.06.2011, there is a bankruptcy proceeding for the Uemis AG, Adliswil. Orders won’t be handled anymore.

This is especially sad for all SDA owners, because this computer followed a strict online logbook concept. All dives can only be synchronized with the Uemis web server – there is no local download capability. That means, when the Uemis server may be shutdown somewhere in the future, SDA owners won’t be able to download their dives from the dive computer anymore. And they won’t be able to access their already downloaded dives in the online logbook anymore.

I was in contact with Uemis since the introduction of the SDA in early 2009 and tried to convince them for an additional local sync solution or at least a way to backup the online dives to the local computer – without success. During that time I got numerous user requests, asking for an integration into Diving Log, but there was not much I could do without Uemis.

If you have an Uemis SDA, do not fear. Not everything is lost, because a group of developers is currently working on a solution, including Jef Driesen from libdivecomputer, which is already the backend of most downloaders in Diving Log and MacDive. We also found a way to access the online dives on the still running Uemis servers and I’ve created already a quick import for these online dives. Read more about that on Scubaboard.com

In the end we hope to have a local sync solution and also a way to automatically download the dives from the Uemis servers, so stay tuned and hope the best!

HTML Export

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

The export to HTML was available in Diving Log 4.0 and was missing in version 5.0 until now – but now it’s back and improved. It lets you export your dives to a HTML table and is probably the easiest way to publish your dives on your own website. The new export, available in the next beta, is now using CSS styles for the table design. It comes with 3 default styles, but you can edit the CSS files, which are located in your Diving Log documents folder (sub folder “CSS”) with any text editor to adjust colors and the design to your website. You can preview here all 3 default styles:

Feel free to modify these styles, create your own and if you want, send me your styles to share them with other Diving Log users. You can also select now the columns, which should be exported, in the HTML, Excel and CSV export.

Dropbox Sync

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

The next update of Diving Log will also contain the ability to synchronize logbooks across multiple Windows PC’s, Mac’s and Smartphones using the new Dropbox sync function. Dropbox is a very popular, free and multi-platform online storage and sync service. Once you’ve installed the Dropbox client on all your PC’s and Mac’s you can exchange easily any file between your computers by simply coping the file into the special Dropbox folder on your disk. Note: The Dropbox client application has to be installed on the PC to use this sync function!

Dropbox Sync

But Diving Log does not simply copy your desktop logbook file, because the Access database format is not really platform independent and could not be read on the Mac or on smartphones. The new Dropbox sync will export your logbook into the SQLite format and also import any changes from other computers back into your logbook. The sync function can manage different logbook files and also additional information like the last sync date and time and from which computer the logbook was last updated.

I will add support for Dropbox sync in future to the Windows Phone 7 version, so you can seamlessly exchange logbook data between any device running WP7, Windows or Mac OS. This feature provides you additionally an online backup system, so you can easily get your dives back when your hard drive crashed.

Diving Log 5.0.1 released

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

Today I’ve released Diving Log 5.0.1 which you can download on the download website. If you’ve followed this blog and installed the several beta version I’ve released during the past few weeks, you won’t notice any big changes from the previous beta, but I recommend you still update to this version as it contains minor bug fixes. If you are still running the official version 5.0.0 from March/April, I highly recommend that you update to version 5.0.1, as it contains lots of new features and many bug fixes and improvements. I will summarize here what has changed since version 5.0.0:

  • Synchronization with online logbooks (Divelogs, YourDiveBook, Dilogs, DiveLogPool)
  • Android sync function
  • Download coordinates from GPS devices
  • New coordinate panel in dive site details dialog
  • Logbook Ribbon Windows 7 Style
  • New field “Exit Time” in logbook window
  • Diving Log Viewer Update
  • Update of the Print & PDF engine
  • Update OSTC Downloader
  • Update UDCF and UDDF Import/Export
  • Subgear support in the Smart downloader and SmartTrak import
  • Import Poseidon MkVI
  • Import JDiveLog
  • Import Blackwave Dive Assistant
  • Import MacDive 2
  • Many small improvements and bug fixes
  • New GPS Tool for Windows Mobile

One remark for Dilogs users: due to changes on the Dilogs login and authentication system, the Dilogs Manager in Diving Log is unfortunately no longer working. Please use the new web sync dialog in order to upload and download your dives. Other features from the Dilogs Manager, like the dive site search, will be integrated in other windows (e.g. dive site details) in the next update, so the Dilogs Manager will then be obsolete.
