Linked and unlinked data

In Diving Log, you can add countries, cities, dive sites and buddies in two different ways: as unlinked or linked items. If you import data from other logbook applications, Diving Log will add these items always as unlinked items. However you may want to convert some or all of them to linked items afterwards, depending on your needs.

Unlinked items:

Unlinked items are marked with a pencil icon in front of them and are entered directly into the text box in the logbook window. There is no further information beside the name of the item. This is useful for locations or buddies you just dive once or don’t have any further information, which you want to store. It’s a lightweight way to save just the name in your logbook. They are added automatically to the dropdown list and disappear automatically if you don’t use them anymore in any dive.

By clicking the button behind the text box you can convert either just this item to a linked item or you can convert all unlinked items to linked items. Please note, this will automatically create detailed items based on the item name and link them to the dives.

Linked items:

Linked items are marked with a chain icon in the front and are added, edited and removed in the details window(s). This indicates there is further information, which can be accessed by clicking the button behind the text box:

When you click on the popup, the details dialog opens where you can modify the data in the details window. When you click on the small image preview, you can view a larger version directly in the logbook window:

Linked and unlinked items are all displayed in the dropdown lists and can be picked up directly from there. To remove linked items from these lists, you have to delete the item from the detailed window. Unlinked items disappear automatically, when they are no longer used in any dive.
